Sermon Title: A Righteous God
Sermon Scripture: 2 Samuel 21:1-14
Sermon Proper: (The Righteous God – II Samuel 21:1-14) We serve a righteous God that relentlessly pursues a right relationship with his people by using everything at his disposal to get our attention including famine. A righteous God deserves no less than reflection in our lives, repentance in our hearts, and reconciliation in our actions. This produces a form of justice that honors the character of God and ushers in renewal that revives creation.
Point #1: A righteous God deserves reflection in our lives. Verse 1 Now there was a famine in the days of David for three years, year after year; and David inquired of the Lord. The Lord said, “There is bloodguilt on Saul and on his house, because he put the Gibeonites to death.”
Prophetic Confession #1: Heavenly Father, thank you for giving us access to your presence as we prayerfully reflect on our attitudes and actions.
Point #2: A righteous God is worthy of repentance in our hearts. Verse 3 David said to the Gibeonites, “What shall I do for you? How shall I make expiation, that you may bless the heritage of the Lord?”
Prophetic Confession #2: Lord Jesus, thank for a repentant heart that seeks to keep the promises we’ve made to reflect our loyalty and leads us beyond the mind we presently have.
Point #3: A righteous God warrants reconciliation in our actions. Verse 12 David went and took the bones of Saul and the bones of his son Jonathan from the people of Jabesh-gilead, who had stolen them from the public square of Beth-shan, where the Philistines had hung them up, on the day the Philistines killed Saul on Gilboa.
Prophetic Confession #3: Holy Spirit, thank for the ministry of reconciliation that keeps us from the poison of seeking revenge against those that have injured us.
