Sermon Title: Thanksgiving Leftovers
Scripture: John 6:10-15
While we rightfully celebrate this as a miracle of multiplication, we should develop a heightened appreciation for the leftover aspects of this popular miracle as one of distribution against accumulation, satisfaction against greed, and plenty against scarcity. A grateful heart surrendered to Christ can unleash God’s abundance when we learn to offer thanksgiving in every situation that is a sign of his presence in our lives.
Point #1: This was a sign of distribution in a world marred by accumulation. Verse 6:11a Then Jesus took the bread and, having given thanks, gave it to those who were seated.
Prophetic Confession: Heavenly Father, thank you for your abundance thriving in us as we share what you have given us with others.
Point #2: This was a sign of satisfaction in a culture sullied by greed. Verse 11b He did the same with the fish. All ate as much as they wanted.
Prophetic Confession: Son of God, thank you for your abundance revealing satisfaction in our experience in what you graciously give us.
Point #3: This was a sign of plenty in a society dampened by scarcity. Verse 6:12 When the people had eaten their fill, he said to his disciples, “Gather the leftovers so nothing is wasted.”
Prophetic Confession: Holy Spirit, thank you for your abundance revealing plenty in our experience of everything that remains in our life to be grateful for.
