The Crucifixion of Jesus

Overview by Raufu Spagnoletta

“The Crucifixion of Jesus is the cornerstone of the Christian faith.  All of scripture leads up to this pinnacle moment in the history of humanity.  Jesus Christ, the Son of God gave His life in order to defeat the deadly consequences of sin… once and for all.  Jesus made a way for us to stand in the presence of the Father, the One True God, and to live with Him for eternity in heaven . Through the most painful death, came the greatest gift, our salvation through the Messiah.” (ref: Bible Study Tools)

After a long night that saw His arrest, trials, beating and sentencing to death, Jesus was led to the site of crucifixion, a placed called Calvary. They crucified Him in the company of two criminals, as Jesus said, “Father, forgive them; for they know not what they do.” While Jesus was hanging on the cross, the rulers derided Him, the soldiers mocked Him, even one of the criminals joined in the choir of ridicule, “If thou be the Christ, save thyself and us.” The second criminal, admitted his own guilt and Jesus’ innocence, and said,  “Lord, remember me when thou comest into thy kingdom.” Jesus said, “Verily, I say unto you, Today shalt thou be with me in paradise.”

From twelve o’clock to three o’clock darkness covered the earth. At three o’clock, Jesus cried with a loud voice, “Father into thy hands I commend My spirit; and having said thus He gave up the ghost.”  At the moment Jesus died, the veil in the temple was torn in two from top to bottom, symbolizing access to God for all, not just the high priest. The centurion saw what happened, and glorified God saying, “Certainly, this was a righteous man.”  The people beat their breasts in sorrow and His disciples including the women stood at a distance watching these things.

Luke 23:26-32; Matthew 27: 11-26; John 10:11-18……….

In Luke 23: 26-32, these verses begin and end with Jesus being led away” to be crucified “. The Roman guards seized Simon of Cyrene to carry the cross. We see Jesus with a body, breaking down from a terrible flogging, lack of food, severe blood lost, and body trauma. There were grief stricken women that followed behind Jesus lamenting and wailing. Jesus redirects these women back to themselves, as His heart was broken for a city because of the pending destruction.

Matthew 27:11-26 describes Jesus’ trial before Pontius Pilate , the Roman governor. The Jewish religious leaders are asking the governor to condemn Jesus to death. Pilate is amazed how Jesus remains silent, and doesn’t say anything in His defense. The governor speaks to the Passover crowd about the choice to release Jesus or Barabbas. The governor agrees to execute Jesus, while claiming no responsibility for the decision.

In the passages of John 10:11-18, Jesus announced Himself, as the Good Shepherd, fulfilling the ideal of shepherd-like care for the people of God.The work of Jesus, as the Good Shepherd was rooted in His close relationship with His God and Father. Jesus claims to have power over life and death. Jesus had the power to lay down His life, and He had the power to take it up again.

Practical Points by Janice Hall

1) One’s commitment to godly principles is revealed in times of greatest personal agony.

We are to be fully committed to God and we will be strengthen by His commitment to us. God wants us to be committed to Him, so that the world may know He is important to us. God strengthens us to become what He created us to be. To be fully committed we must have and know Jesus is first in our life. Each day begins with talking to God in prayer, which will keep us focused, strengthen throughout the day and seeking Him with every decision.

6) We have access to the Father through Jesus’ blood.

We gain bold access to God in prayer and worship. “ Therefore, brothers and sisters, since we have confidence to enter the Most Holy Place by the blood of Jesus, by a new and living way opened for us through the curtain, that is, his body..”( Hebrews10: 19,20 NIV). He is our High Priest, before the throne of God, also our Advocate and intercedes for us. Accessing God through His Word is a necessity for spiritual growth, and prayer to strengthen our spiritual life.
