Sermon Title: A Different Kind of Love
Scripture: St John 21:15-23
Point #1: God’s love goes beyond our experience with love. Verse 21:15 When they had finished breakfast, Jesus said to Simon Peter, “Simon son of John, do you love me more than these?” He said to him, “Yes, Lord; you know that I love you.” Jesus said to him, “Feed my lambs.”
Point #2: God’s love requires us to follow him. Verse 21:18-19 Very truly, I tell you, when you were younger, you used to fasten your own belt and to go wherever you wished. But when you grow old, you will stretch out your hands, and someone else will fasten a belt around you and take you where you do not wish to go.” 19 (He said this to indicate the kind of death by which he would glorify God.) After this he said to him, “Follow me.”
Point #3: God’s love is unique to our assignment. Verse 21:22 Jesus said to him, “If it is my will that he remain until I come, what is that to you? Follow me!”
Sermon Proper: (A Different Kind of Love – St John 21:15-23) Each us has experienced love in some form through religion, culture, family, and other relationships. Although this kind of love can have some value; God still needs to reframe, reconfigure, and reconcile it with a different kind of love that can only be found in Christ. Christ’s love goes beyond our experience, requires us to follow him, and is unique to our assignment.
