St. Matthew 5:33-37 (NRSV)
Christ came to give his followers a transformational view of God’s ancient laws enlivened by his living presence. As disciples, Christ changes our relationship with words to ensure that the flow of blessing isn’t interrupted. Christ expects truthfulness from his followers by challenging assumptions rooted in manipulation, correcting us with a fresh perspective, and charges us with a path of blessing.
Point #1: Challenges assumptions rooted in manipulation. Verse 5:33 “Again, you have heard that it was said to those of ancient times, ‘You shall not swear falsely, but carry out the vows you have made to the Lord.’
Point #2: Corrects with a fresh perspective. Verse 5:34 But I say to you, Do not swear at all, either by heaven, for it is the throne of God,
Point #3: Charges us with a path of blessing. Verse 5:37 Let your word be ‘Yes, Yes’ or ‘No, No’; anything more than this comes from the evil one.
Journaling Prompts: What is swearing and why is it destructive? How can we grow as disciples in right relationship with God and each other? What can we learn about Christ that offers us a different view of our words?
